We explored the books containing the old electoral registers for Hammermsith (covering W12 and Stamford Brook) and also the photos held on file (which can be requested on the day). The archive has a wealth of material which isn't kept on public access but can be requested with a week's notice. We had requested planning applications and drainage plans for various roads - as they contain beautiful drawings of our homes before they were built, they also list the builder's and developer's names.
The main emphasis of this trip was Emlyn Road and Aylmer Road. Future visits will focus on Prebend, Hartswood, Pleydell and Palgrave Roads. We found beautiful watercolour drawings of some of the Emlyn Road Houses and plans showing the different blocks that the road was built in. We also discovered photos of Emlyn Gardens as it was first built and Aylmer Road after it had been bombed.
We will be returning as a group in the next few weeks, so please let Nigel Walley know if you would like to join an informal visit. However residents should feel free to visit. The Library is on Shepherds Bush Road (oppositte the old Hammersmith Palais building). We would recommend you email the Archivists before you visit to say hello and let them know you are coming. We recommend telling the archivist the kinds of things you are interested in seeing and they will point you at what they have. Please be aware that that the archives are only open Mon-Weds to visitors and, if you want something from the main archive, you need to give a week's notice so it can be accessed for you.
